Natural Stone or Marble? Which Is Better for Your Home Waterfall
An honest comparison of split-face stone (slate, sandstone, travertine, quartzite) versus polished marble for waterfalls: look, price, weight, maintenance and water resistance.

The question every client asks
After the size, the first decision is the material: split-face natural stone or polished marble? There's no single answer, but there is a right answer for your space, taste and budget. Here's the comparison the way we explain it in the showroom.
Look and feel
- Split-face stone (slate, sandstone, travertine, quartzite): a rough, layered surface with shadows. Water breaks over the ridges, sparkles and makes a clearer sound. Warm and natural; suits wooden furniture, gardens and terraces.
- Polished marble (Carrara, Galala, Nero Marquina, Emperador): a smooth, glossy surface with visible veining. Water glides down like a quiet glass sheet. Luxurious and modern; suits light living rooms and formal entrances.
Price
Split-face stone is clearly cheaper. A square metre of stone strips costs roughly a third of imported marble, so a stone wall of the same size usually saves 20 to 35% on the final price. From our catalogue: the green slate feature wall at EGP 44,000 versus the Carrara cascade wall at EGP 118,000.
Weight
20 mm marble weighs about 54 kg per square metre. Stone strips on a steel frame weigh about 45 kg per metre but need no demolition and no foundation. On upper floors and balconies, stone with a stainless basin is the safe choice.
Limescale and maintenance
Egyptian tap water is hard, so it leaves white limescale. On dark polished marble (Nero Marquina, for example) the marks show clearly and need a weekly wipe. On light split-face stone they are barely noticeable. Read our stone waterfall maintenance tips.
Water and sun resistance
- Slate, quartzite and basalt: excellent indoors and outdoors.
- Sandstone and limestone: great indoors and on shaded balconies; need a sealer outdoors.
- Marble: excellent indoors; outdoors, Galala and granite outlast Carrara, which can yellow in strong sun.
When to choose stone
- A limited budget but a big wall in mind.
- A warm or modern-rustic interior.
- A balcony, terrace or upper floor.
When to choose marble
- A formal living room or a luxury villa entrance.
- A modern design with light colours and marble floors.
- A statement wall that deserves imported stone.
Or combine both
Many clients choose a split-face stone wall with a marble basin, or marble with a stone edge. On every product page, click the stone options to see the change instantly, or visit our showroom to see the real samples.
