7 Maintenance Tips for Stone and Marble Waterfalls

Keep your waterfall clean and quiet for years with 7 practical tips on Egypt's hard water, descaling, pump care, sealing, summer evaporation, algae and LED checks.

7 Maintenance Tips for Stone and Marble Waterfalls

Simple care makes a big difference

A stone waterfall is built to last, but like anything that runs on water it needs regular care. The good news is that maintenance takes only a few minutes a week, and it protects both the beauty of the stone and the life of the pump. Here are seven practical tips from our installation team's experience.

1. Understand Egypt's hard water

Tap water in many parts of Egypt contains noticeable levels of calcium and magnesium, known as hard water. When water evaporates from the surface of your waterfall, these minerals stay behind and form a dull white film on the stone.

What to do:

  • Top up with filtered or reverse-osmosis (RO) water where possible.
  • For larger waterfalls, consider a simple filter on the supply line.
  • Wipe dark surfaces such as Marquina weekly with a soft cloth, as scale shows clearly on them.

2. Descale the right way

Marble is a calcium-based stone that reacts to acids, so never use vinegar, lemon or acidic bathroom cleaners on it. They strip the shine and can leave permanent etch marks.

The right method:

  1. Switch off the power to the waterfall.
  2. Use a pH-neutral cleaner designed for marble and stone.
  3. Clean with a soft brush or non-abrasive sponge.
  4. Rinse well with clean water and dry any exposed surfaces.

Repeat every two to three months, or more often depending on how hard your water is. Granite and basalt tolerate slightly stronger cleaners, but check with us first.

3. Look after the pump, the heart of the waterfall

The pump is the only mechanical part, and caring for it greatly extends its life:

  • Clean the pump filter and intake roughly once a month, removing hair, leaves and sediment.
  • Listen to it: unusual humming or vibration may mean a blockage or low water level.
  • Never run the pump dry. It's the number one cause of pump failure and isn't covered by the warranty.

4. Renew the stone sealer

A sealer fills the pores of the stone and stops it absorbing water, minerals and stains. Over time this layer wears down.

  • Indoor waterfalls: re-seal once a year.
  • Outdoor and poolside waterfalls: roughly every six months.

A simple test: put a few drops of water on a dry surface. If they soak in quickly and darken the stone, it's time to re-seal.

5. Watch for summer evaporation

In Egypt's hot summers, especially in open gardens and on terraces, a large share of the water can evaporate within a few days.

  • Check the water level every two or three days in summer.
  • Top up before the level gets close to the pump.
  • For large outdoor waterfalls, an automatic float valve saves you daily checks.
  • If you're travelling, switch the waterfall off or ask someone to keep an eye on it.

6. Stop algae before it starts

Light, heat and still water create ideal conditions for green algae, particularly on outdoor waterfalls.

  • Run the waterfall regularly; moving water is less prone to algae.
  • Change the water completely every two to four weeks.
  • Use algae treatments that are safe for stone and pumps, and only at the stated dose.
  • Remove leaves and debris as they appear.

7. Check the LED lighting

Lighting turns your waterfall into a night-time showpiece, and it needs a quick check now and then:

  • Make sure every unit shines at the same brightness each month.
  • Clean scale off the light lenses, as it dims the output.
  • Inspect cables and connections for cracks, especially outdoors.
  • Make sure the power supply is earthed and protected by a residual-current breaker.

Quick maintenance schedule

  • Weekly: wipe surfaces and remove debris
  • Every 2 to 3 days in summer: check the water level
  • Monthly: clean the pump and check the lighting
  • Every 2 to 3 months: descale
  • Every 6 to 12 months: renew the sealer
