Water Feature Ideas for Apartments and Balconies
You don't need a villa to enjoy the sound of water. Practical water feature ideas for apartments and balconies, plus what to know about weight, noise and power.

The sound of water isn't just for villas
Many people assume stone waterfalls and fountains need a large garden or a big villa. In fact, apartments and balconies can host wonderful pieces, as long as you choose the right design and size. The gentle sound of water softens city noise, adds a little welcome humidity and makes a space feel calmer.
In this article we share practical ideas for apartment spaces, then cover the key technical considerations before you buy.
1. Tabletop cascades
The easiest and most affordable place to start. Tabletop waterfalls are small, ready-made pieces with a closed water loop and no complicated installation: just fill them with water and plug them in.
- Ideal for a reception area, home office or reading corner
- Available in white and black marble, Galala and onyx
- Prices start from around EGP 6,500
Browse indoor and tabletop pieces to find one that fits your space.
2. Pebble entrance fountain
Your apartment entrance is the first thing guests see. A small stone entrance fountain with a basin hidden under natural pebbles creates a memorable first impression.
- The basin sits under the pebbles, so there's no open water on show
- Relatively safe in homes with children
- Takes up only a small footprint against a wall
- Entrance fountains start from around EGP 18,500
3. The bubbler
A stone block or marble column drilled through the centre, with water rising gently from the top, running down the sides and disappearing into pebbles below. It's a simple, modern design that suits balconies and terraces.
- Very quiet, suitable near bedrooms
- Can be made from basalt, granite or Sinai stone for outdoor use
- Easy to maintain because almost no water is exposed
4. Backlit onyx
For luxury apartments, nothing matches a honey onyx panel with a thin sheet of water flowing over it and LED lighting behind. At night the piece becomes a warm, glowing artwork.
- Perfect behind a sofa or along an entrance hallway
- Can be built as a slim wall waterfall with limited depth
- Requires precise design and professional fixing
5. A slim balcony wall waterfall
If your balcony is reasonably spacious, a wall waterfall 60 to 90 cm wide in Galala or travertine can turn it into a real retreat. Browse wall waterfalls to see the options.
Key considerations before you buy
Weight
Stone is heavy, and water adds more weight. Before placing a large piece in an apartment or on a balcony:
- Check that the floor or wall can carry the load, especially on cantilevered balconies.
- Choose designs with thinner panels or smaller basins to reduce weight.
- Place the load near structural walls rather than in the middle of the balcony.
- Consult building management or a structural engineer for larger pieces.
During the site survey, our team reviews these points and proposes a safe design.
Noise
The sound of water is a pleasure, but the level should suit the room:
- A gentle flow over a sloped surface is quieter than a free fall
- The greater the drop, the louder the sound
- Good pumps run almost silently
- Most pieces let you adjust the flow rate
For bedrooms and workspaces, we recommend a gentle flow or a bubbler.
Power
- Place the piece near an earthed power outlet
- On balconies, use a weatherproof outlet protected by a residual-current breaker
- Small pumps use very little electricity, roughly as much as an ordinary light bulb
- A timer can switch the waterfall on at set times
Water and humidity
- Choose closed or pebble-covered basins to reduce splashing
- Indoors, keep the piece away from wood furniture and sensitive electronics
- Fill with filtered water to reduce scale
